Hybrid Coastal Protection: Integrating Nature based and hard engineered structures for Climate-Resilient Shorelines

Magryn & Associates are thrilled to announce the formal commencement of a PhD research project in collaboration with Flinders University under the Industry Researcher PhD stream of the Australian Government Department of Education's National Industry PhD Program.

The Projec
t: Hybrid Coastal Protection: Integrating Nature-Based and Hard Engineered Structures for Climate-Resilient Shorelines

Magryn and Associates have always been passionate about the coast, and this partnership marks a significant step forward in bridging the gap between academia and industry in the coastal space. Together with PhD candidate Will Souter, we’re grateful for the opportunity to expand our specialisation and apply research directly to solve pressing coastal challenges, delivering outcomes that benefit communities and future generations.

A huge thank you to our research team:
Academic Supervisors: Professor Patrick HespA and Associate Professor Graziela Miot da Silva Flinders University
Academic Co-superv
isor: Associate Professor Sierd de Vries, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
Industry Supervisor: Terry Magryn, Magryn & Associates

This research will explore scalable, practical alternatives to traditional seawalls by combining nature-based solutions with engineered structures, helping communities adapt to sea level rise and increasing storm events confidently and in novel ways.

Thanks to Nilla Wen and Anne-Marie Webber at Flinders University for facilitating this project.
