Identifying strategic factors affecting commercialisation success in public research organisations: Developing a managerial guideline
One of the strengths of the National Industry PhD Program run by Campus Plus is that projects are embedded in real-world environments. As a result, they often evolve alongside the industries, organisations and people involved.
A great example is Xiaoyin Shang Industry Researcher PhD project: Identifying strategic factors affecting commercialisation success in public research organisations: Developing a managerial guideline.
Originally undertaken through a collaboration between Macquarie University and National Acoustic Laboratories, the research explores how public research organisations can more effectively translate research into products and services that deliver real-world impact. The project focuses on developing evidence-based processes and practical guidelines to improve research commercialisation, innovation success and R & D investment efficiency.
Since commencing the project, Xiaoyin Shang has taken maternity leave and transitioned to a new industry role. As part of this journey, the industry partnership has evolved and the project is now being supported by The Housing Connection, with Nicola Hayhoe providing industry supervision.
While the industry setting has changed, the central research challenge remains highly relevant: understanding how organisations can successfully translate ideas, evidence and innovation into meaningful outcomes for the communities they serve. This broader focus on innovation, organisational capability and impact continues to create opportunities for valuable cross-sector learning and research translation.
Changes like this are not always possible but what we love about Industry PhDs is that we try and support where possible. The projects, careers and academic journeys reflect life. Careers evolve, organisations change, opportunities emerge and researchers bring their expertise into new contexts. The flexibility of the National Industry PhD Program allows projects to grow alongside these changes while maintaining their research impact and industry relevance.
Congratulations to Xiaoyin Shang and Ralf Wilden on continuing this PhD journey and thank you to Nicola Hayhoe and the team at The Housing Connection for supporting the next chapter of this important research.
