Using ocean observations from fishing vessels in the Australian tuna longline fishery to elucidate the catchability of commercially valuable fish under climate change
🌊 Big news for marine science and sustainability!
Campus Plus are pleased to announce the official kick-off a new National Industry PhD Program Award that’s set to transform how we understand and manage tuna fisheries in a changing climate.
This partnership brings together the world-class fisheries innovation and sustainability capabilities of Tuna Australia and the marine science and climate adaptation expertise of the University of the Sunshine Coast to explore how ocean observations from fishing vessels can improve understanding of tuna and billfish catchability under climate change.
The project, “Using ocean observations from fishing vessels in the Australian tuna longline fishery to elucidate the catchability of commercially valuable fish under climate change”, will combine real-time ocean data with advanced modelling to build forecasting systems that empower fishers to adapt proactively. The ultimate goal is to boost fishing efficiency, strengthen sustainability, and future-proof the Australian tuna industry.
The research will be led by a PhD candidate Joshua Esman, supported by A/Prof Kylie Scales from University of the Sunshine Coast and mentored by David Ellis from Tuna Australia. Huge congratulations to everyone driving this exciting initiative forward!
