Addressing the methodology issues used in textile rating systems for assessing the environmental impact of natural fibres
Campus Plus is pleased to profile another research collaboration made possible by the Australian Government Department of Education's National Industry PhD Program: PhD candidate Emma Longworth is working with Chris Guppy from University of New England (AU) and Steve Wiedemann from Integrity Ag on a project to more accurately determine the environmental impact of the production and use of natural fibres, which is a critical component of global product rating systems.
If product rating systems for natural fibres do not properly reflect environmental flows and impacts it can result in unfair comparisons, incorrect product-label guidance to consumers, incorrectly affect decision-making in sourcing materials and ultimately, if unintentionally, develop into a significant trade barrier. This is an important project to ensure the livelihoods of commercial and smallholder producers, particularly those in Australia's wool industry looking to sell into European and other global markets.
